Allan Robert Brusse

August 6, 1946 — March 15, 2024

Sheboygan

Allan R Brusse, born on August 6, 1946, to Delmar and Arlene (Wolters) Brusse in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, peacefully departed this life on March 15, 2024, at Sharon Richardson Hospice House, surrounded by his loved ones. He leaves behind a legacy of love, music, and kindness that will forever resonate in the hearts of those who knew him.

Al's journey began in the heart of Sheboygan, where he attended Sheboygan North High School and graduated with the class of 1964. He then embarked on his academic pursuits at the University of Wisconsin - Madison, earning both his Bachelor's (with honors) in 1969 and master’s degrees in music in 1984. His dedication to his studies was matched only by his passion for music, which would shape his life's work and touch the lives of many.

In 1971, Al's love for music and leadership skills led him to organize the Wausau Story Drum and Bugle Corps, an endeavor that culminated in the corps winning the prestigious DCI Class A World Championship in August 1976. Al's influence extended beyond performance; he also served as a national adjudicator of Drum and Bugle Corps with Drum Corps International, where he adjudicated the DCI World Championships from 1972 to 1975, leaving an indelible mark on the world of music.

Al also dedicated himself to music education, teaching at DC Everest Middle and Junior High in Schofield, WI, for an impressive 35 years. He was not only a teacher but also a mentor, sharing his love for music with his students and the community at large. Al's passion for music extended beyond the classroom, as he frequently conducted musicals with the Wausau Community Theater and the Central Wisconsin Children's Theater, leaving a lasting impact on the local arts scene.

In recognition of his contributions to the arts community, Al was honored to receive the Noel Seim Award from the Wausau Community Theater in 1993. Even after retiring, Al's dedication to music remained unwavering. He continued to share his knowledge and passion by teaching at UW-Sheboygan and Lakeland College, adjudicating music competitions through the Wisconsin School Music Association, performing as a member and Associate Conductor of the Sheboygan Pops Concert Band, and directing the St Mark Jubilation Singers and Bell Choir.

Beyond his musical pursuits, Al found joy in serving his community, volunteering for St. Mark's Food Pantry and enjoying leisurely activities such as golfing, cross-country skiing, and traveling. He was also a beloved companion to his feline friend, Opera.

Al's memory will forever be cherished by his surviving sisters, Virginia Altendahl of Sheboygan, and Carol Coombe (Tom) of Eveleth, MN, as well as his nephews Dean Radtke (Teri), Richard Radtke (Lynette), Charles Coombe (Jen), Micky Brusse (Lisa) , Matthew Altendahl (Katie), nieces Tina Belongia (Jeremy) and Candi Schnitzler (Leo) and countless friends and students whose lives he touched. He was preceded in death by his parents, Delmar and Arlene, his brother and sister-in-law Thomas and Sherry Brusse, and his nephew Christopher Radtke.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, March 22, 2024 at 12:00 p.m. at St Mark Lutheran Church in Sheboygan with the Reverend Tyler Werner officiating. Relatives and friends may visit with the family on Friday, March 22, 2024 from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service at the CHURCH.

The family extends special thanks to Dr. S. Mark Bettag and staff, Sheboygan Progressive Health Services, and Sharon Richardson Hospice for their compassionate care.

Though Al may have left this world, his music and memory will continue to inspire and uplift those who were fortunate enough to know him. May he rest in eternal peace, surrounded by the melodies he loved so dearly.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund will be established in Allan’s name.

Forever in our hearts, Allan R. Brusse will be dearly missed but never forgotten.
