Carl Darovich, age 90, of Sheboygan, died Monday, January 23, 2017 at Sunny Ridge Nursing Home. He was born August 25, 1926 in Iron Mountain, Michigan to Charles and Ludmilla (Somora) Darovich. He attended local Iron Mountain schools and on February 22, 1945 enlisted in the US Navy during WWII. He served aboard the USS Biloxi and the US Facility. He was honorably discharged on July 7, 1946.
On April 22, 1950 Carl and Marvel Stubbe were united in marriage at St. John's United Church of Christ. Marvel preceded him in death on March 21, 2004.
For over forty years Carl was employed at the in the brass foundry at Kohler Company.
He was a member of St. John's UCC and it's Brotherhood.
In his youth Carl was an excellent swimmer and self-proclaimed daredevil who jumped off a 50 foot cliff and dove off a 25 foot cliff into the Iron Mountain "Pit". He swam a mile around Lake Antoine in Iron Mountain non-stop. He also participated in non-competitive ski jumping in 1947. He was an avid collector of ski jumping and Western memorabilia going back to the 1930's. Gene Autry was his boyhood idol. Carl had featured stories about his collections in the Iron Mountain News. Part of his ski jumping collection has been donated to the Ski Hall of Fame in St. Paul, Minnesota.
Carl is survived by his son, Dennis (Linda) Darovich of Sheboygan; his granddaughter, Amy (Floyd) Brooks of Lilburn, Georgia; twin great-grandchildren, Seth and Eliana Brooks; his brother, Robert (Jean) Darovich of Troy, Michigan; his sister, Rosemary Geronimi of Niagara, Wisconsin; and other relatives and friends.
In addition to his wife, Marvel, he was preceded in death by his brother-in-law, Donald Geronimi.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, January 26, 2017 at 12 noon at Ballhorn Funeral Chapels. Rev. Greg Whelton, Pastor of St. John's UCC, will officiate. A time of visitation and support will be held from 11:00 a.m. until the time of service. Burial with full military honors will follow at Lutheran Cemetery.
Carl's family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the staff at Sunny Ridge, especially the 2nd floor and the Activity Department, and the Compassus Hospice for their comfort and care.
Carl looked forward to and thoroughly enjoyed going out to eat once or twice a week with his son and daughter-in-law. He always said, "I'm not Italian, but I love pasta!"
