Doris H. Progar, 100, of Milwaukee, formerly of Sheboygan, passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 7, 2016 at Close To Home nursing home in Wauwatosa. Doris was born in Kiel on October 23, 1915 to William and Hilda (Voland) Schnur. She graduated from Plymouth High School in 1933.
Doris proudly served in the US Navy during WWII from 1944 to 1946. She had enlisted because they were looking for recruits who spoke German. She served as a Chief Petty Officer at the Pentagon.
On January 22, 1948 she was united in marriage to the love of her life Anthony J. Progar at Ss. Cyril Methodius Catholic Church in Sheboygan. Anthony preceded her in death on February 10, 1963. Doris worked for Citizens Bank of Sheboygan prior to working at the H.C. Prange corporate office in accounts receivable. She retired from there in 1987. Doris was a hard worker, and loved doing things for others. She volunteered at St. Vincents DePaul, at the voting booths on Election Day, and at Home Spun. She loved spending time with her family and friends. Doris was a member of Ss. Cyril Methodius and was active with the Christian Mothers.
Doris is survived by her daughter Jean Marie (Art Carter) Helmle of Milwaukee, her son Steven (Mary) Progar of Jacksonville, FL, nine grandchildren; Christopher (Holly) Progar, Andrew Progar, Josh Progar, Dolores Rodriguez, Elone Rodriguez, Anthony Manual, Larry (Melissa) Guy, Mariah and Brandon Pogue, by five great-grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Anthony, a brother Willard (Antonia) Schnur, and a sister Betty (Herb) Rohde.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, April 15, 2016 at 11:30 AM at Zimmer Westview Funeral Cremation Care Center W2132 Garton Rd. Sheboygan, with Fr. Richard J. Cerpich officiating. Inurnment will follow at Greendale Cemetery. Relatives and friends may visit with the family on Friday, April 15, 2016 from 10:30 AM to 11:30 AM at the FUNERAL HOME.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to either the Alzheimers Association or Safe Harbor of Sheboygan County.
The family would like to express a special Thank you to Cheryl and the staff at Close To Home and the staff at Ally Hospice for all the care, love, and support they gave Doris and her family.
