Dorothy Werthmann

August 7, 1926 — January 24, 2015

Dorothy E. Werthmann, age 88, of Howards Grove, went home to the loving arms of her Lord on Saturday morning, January 24, 2015 with her daughter, Marcy, at her side. She was born August 7, 1926 in Stratford, WI to William and Esther (Knoener) Burkhardt. Dorothy moved to Sheboygan to work at Mission House (now Lakeland College). Summers she worked at Siebken's in Elkhart Lake and later she worked at Gmach's Restaurant in Sheboygan. On August 25, 1945 Dorothy and Wesley Werthmann were united in marriage at Immanuel United Church of Christ. Together they farmed on the family homestead until their retirement in 1979 when they moved to Howards Grove. Wesley preceded her in death on May 18, 1995. Dorothy was a faithful member of Zion United Church of Christ (now Zion Evangelical Covenant Church) where she belonged to Elizabeth Circle. Dorothy always loved farming. One of the joys of her life was milking the cows which began in her childhood. After Wesley died she began working in many capacities for Goking Livestock on Hwy 42. She also worked at the canning factory in Cedar Grove. Dorothy was an excellent homemaker who enjoyed cooking, baking, tending her garden and flowerbeds, feeding the cardinals, working jigsaw puzzles, and making crafts. One of her specialties was her homemade Christmas candy which she gave to family and friends. Dorothy was a very social person who enjoyed traveling, dancing, and playing cards and games with family and friends. She is survived by her daughter, Marceline Wethmann of Howards Grove; her daughter-in-law, Charlotte Werthmann of Neenah, WI; two grandchildren, Rachel (Sean) Moderson of Grand Chute, WI, WI and Rebecca Werthmann of Sheboygan Falls; two great-granddaughters, Mackenzie and Layla Moderson; one brother, Arvin Burkhardt of Black River Falls, WI; one sister-in-law, Valeta Burkhardt of Howards Grove; her loving nieces and nephews, Michael Burkhardt, Sandra Burkhardt, Wendy (David) Estes, Harold (Lisa) Burkhardt, Jr., Lori (Bill) Hartman, Randy (Myra) Burkhardt, Jeff Burkhardt, Ervin Burklhardt, Father Alan Burkhardt; Darlajean (Gary) Spielman, Doreen Schweitzer, and Diane (David) Johnson; seventeen great-nieces and great-nephews; her dear friends, Rose Spindler , Jane Waldoch, Kathy, Amy, Eric, and Nathan Roehl, Earl (Lois) Glaeser and, Merlin (Doris) Ninmer; cousins and other relatives and friends. In addition to her husband, Wesley, she was preceded in death by her son, Rev. Lloyd Werthmann; three brothers, Ezra Burkhardt, Lester (Mary Ann, deceased) Burkhardt, and Harold Burkhardt; Sr.; one sister-in-law, Helen Burkhardt; and her brother-in-law and sister-in-law, David (Jeanette) Raeder. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, January 29, 2015 at 12:30 p.m. at Zion Evangelical Covenant Church, 1125 N. 6th St., Sheboygan. Pastor Andy Hopp will officiate. A time of visitation and support will be held at the church from 10:30 a.m. until the time of service. Burial will take place at Greenlawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Kohler. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in her name for Zion Evangelical Covenant Church. Marcy would like to thank the excellent caregivers at Comfort Keepers, Cedar Bay in Elkhart Lake, Azura Memory Care in Sheboygan, and Serenity Hospice for the kindness and support given to Dorothy. Dorothy will always be remembered for her beautiful smile. She will be dearly missed.
