Gust Dallas

October 3, 1923 — September 11, 2016

Gust Dallas, born in Chicago, October 3, 1923 to Nicolas and Betty (Vasnos) Dallas died Sunday morning, September 11, 2016, at Rocky Knoll in Plymouth, Wisconsin. He was a little shy of his 93rd birthday. Gust attended Ella Flagg Young Grammar School where he earned the nickname "Small, But Mighty" and then Austin High School from which he graduated in 1942. He landed on Omaha Beach June 12th 1944 with the U.S. First Army D Battery 460th AAA Aw Battalion serving with an artillery unit. He saw action at The Battle of the Bulge and the Battle of Hurtgen Forest where he narrowly escaped enemy forces who raided the field hospital where he was recovering. It took him two weeks to find and return to his unit. He also saw action at the Battle of Remagan (Ludendorff) Bridge. After the war Gust returned to school at Wright College where he would meet June Brack, his future wife. They were married at City Hall January 1, 1949 and remained together 63 years until June's passing in 2012. Gust was a 40 year resident of Northbrook and owned CIC a small specialty plumbing supply company. He was a founding member of St. Peter & Paul Greek Orthodox Church in Glenview. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and his wife. He is survived by his five children, Nickolas Dallas(Suzanne), Pamela Rudnick (Alan), Chester Dallas (Timothy Griffin), Agnes Roberts (Scott) and James Dallas (Diane). He is also survived by ten grandchildren. Gust loved fishing and continued to tend a vegetable garden up until his passing. He was a neighbor and friend to many at Landmark in Sheboygan, Wisconsin where he and June came to live out the last years of their lives. His family owes a debt of gratitude to Melanie Arthur, Gust's friend and care giver extraordinaire.
