John VanderPuy

January 26, 1955 — October 4, 2014

John Van Der Puy, age 59, passed away unexpectedly on October 4, 2014 in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, with the memories of his loved ones in his heart. John was born on January 26, 1955. He was the son of William and Elizabeth (Esser) Van Der Puy. John graduated from North High School in 1973. He then pursued his education at UW-Stout and UW-Madison, ultimately earning a business degree from Madison Business College. He was a member of Chi Psi Fraternity while a student in Madison, Wisconsin. On September 9, 1978, he married Marilyn Hasenstein, daughter of Herbert & Frieda Hasenstein. The couple built their life in Sheboygan, raising three daughters together: Michelle, Sarah and Jenna. John began his professional career by working as the head of one of the divisions of his family's company, Paper Box & Specialty, in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. Several years later, he purchased Friend's Professional Stationery, a subsidiary of Paper Box & Specialty and he served as its president for many years. Then, in 2003, John's daughter, Sarah, was injured in a life-altering car accident and John left Friend's Stationery, devoting his life to bringing his daughter home. On Father's Day in 2004, John's heartfelt wish came true and he brought Sarah home. In 2004, John purchased the Hoppmann Group, a print and design company based out of Wauwatosa, Wisconsin. He was joined in partnership by Dale Rauwerdink in 2006. His daughter Jenna also joined him in 2006, where he was a mentor for her in sales. The two - father and daughter - ran Hoppmann's internal operations. John's legacy in the print world will be carried on by Jenna. In addition to running his print company, John was also a Town of Sheboygan Constable since 2003. His passion for law enforcement was evident in the pride and honor he brought to the position. He was highly regarded by many members of law enforcement and by the Town residents he served. John took the time to meet and know the residents and businesses of the Town, and he took particular care to watch over the children of the Town. He will always be remembered for being on patrol often, protecting bicyclists, helping during elections and special town events and handing out candy to the Town children on Halloween. John's family and friends will remember his passion for sailing, a passion he shared with his family, especially his daughter, Sarah. John was an avid sailor the majority of his life, having been a member of the Sheboygan Yacht Club for the past 41 years. We will also remember his wit and humor, his ability to make even a stranger smile, his love of Hawaiian shirts, and the fact that near and far, John touched so many lives. John is survived by his wife, Marilyn Van Der Puy, of Sheboygan, Wisconsin, daughters Michelle (Mark) Casper of New Albany, Ohio, Sarah Van Der Puy of Sheboygan, Wisconsin, and Jenna (Andrew) Bagley of Glendale, Wisconsin. He is also survived by his beloved grandchildren, Alexandra and Jack Casper. Additional survivors include his mother, Elizabeth Van Der Puy of Sheboygan, Wisconsin, his brother, Nick Van Der Puy of Hayward, Wisconsin and his two sisters, Liz (Bill) Schepp of Sheboygan, Wisconsin and Amy (Todd) Schwoerer of Estero, Florida. In addition, he is survived by his brother and sister-in-law Glen and Linda Hasenstein of Sheboygan, Wisconsin, and Bob and Pat Fenton of Charlotte, North Carolina. He is also survived by many cherished nieces and nephews. John was preceded in death by his paternal and maternal grandparents, his father, William Van Der Puy, his mother & father in-law, Herbert and Frieda Hasenstein, and his nephews, Bradley Hasenstein & Wade Schepp. In lieu of flowers, memorial funds have been established in his name for the Sarah Van Der Puy Contribution Account and Trinity Lutheran Church, where he was a long-standing member. Funeral services in celebration of John's life will be held on Friday, October 10, 2014 at 3:00 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, 824 Wisconsin Avenue, Sheboygan, Wisconsin. The Reverend Timothy Mech & the Reverend John Berg will officiate. A time of visitation and support will be held at the church from 11 a.m. until the time of the service. Burial will follow at Sheboygan Falls Cemetery. John's true love was his family. He built a beautiful life with his wife, Marilyn, and his proudest moments were raising his three little girls into the women they are today. He devoted his life to his family, never wavering from his belief that the only thing that truly matters at the end of the day are the people that love you. The family would like to express their gratitude for the tremendous outpouring of support and love shown to them during this difficult time. "If there ever comes a day when we can't be together, keep me in your heart, I'll stay there forever."
