June Wheeler

Viola "June" Wheeler, age 87, of Silver Lake, died on February 1, 2014, at her daughter's home in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. June was born on July 7, 1926, the daughter of the late Eugene and Anna Hartnell from Salem, Wisconsin. June attended local schools and graduated from UW-Madison in 1946. She was one of the first women to graduate from UW-Madison with a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering. In the 1970's June obtained her Master's degree in Mathematics from Marquette University in Milwaukee. June met Frank H. "Moon" Wheeler while they were working as engineers in California. They were married on May 10, 1947 and moved to Silver Lake, Wisconsin shortly thereafter. They had four children, Geoffrey Wheeler of Northfield, Minnesota; Harris (Cyndi) Wheeler of Birmingham, Alabama; Ellyn (Herb) Becker of Sheboygan, Wisconsin; and Tracey Wheeler of Salem, Wisconsin. June taught Mathematics to high school students at Wilmot High School and Badger High School for over thirty years. June loved teaching and led many adolescents to careers in areas of Mathematics and Engineering. June also nationally promoted women in the field of engineering and received the Herb Kohl award for Teacher of the Year. An avid hiker, June loved to hike the trails of the Rawah Wilderness area in North Central Colorado as well as many trails in other parts of the United States. June was a long time member of the Ice Age Trail Organization in Wisconsin, not only hiking the Ice Age Trails in Southern Wisconsin but also being an honored member who helped to maintain the trails in existence and blaze new ones. She now travels the trails of Heaven with her loved ones. Preceding June in death was her husband, Frank Harris "Moon" Wheeler and her parents and many friends. She leaves behind her four children, six grandchildren and two great grandchildren. No funeral services are planned as it was June's wish not to be remembered in death, but in life. A memorial gathering in Salem, Wisconsin will be planned at a later date. Memorial donations can be made to the Ice Age Trail, care of Tracy Wheeler, 6114 245th Ave, Salem, Wisconsin. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff of St. Nicholas Home Health Care and also to the staff of Sharon S. Richardson Community Hospice for their excellent care. In life comes death and rebirth. As her family comes to rebirth in Heaven we know that June will greet us and take us on many more adventures in the home God has created for us.
