Karen R. Brand, age 75, of Kohler, passed away peacefully on Wednesday March 6, 2013 at Sharon S. Richardson Community Hospice. She was born August 18, 1937 in Manitowoc, the daughter of the late Harold and Louise (Pasewalk) Kohls. Karen graduated from Kohler High School, class of 1955, where she was the captain of the Kohler High School cheerleading squad. Karen was employed at various companies in Sheboygan County over the years, including the Kohler Company, Road America, Kohler Credit Union, and Donohue & Associates. She retired from Strategic Data Systems in 1997. Karen married Henry Fricke. She later married Walter J. Brand II on March 21, 1975; he preceded her in death on November 14, 1990. Active in the community, Karen was involved with the Kohler Girl Scouts where she had been on the Board of Directors, and the Kohler Village Players, The AFS plays in Elkhart Lake, and was a model for the Kohler Company. Karen's passion was knitting. She also enjoyed water color painting, winning honorable mention for the Helen Mears Milwaukee Journal Calendar Art Contest. Karen was an avid gardener, and loved outdoor wildlife, bird watching, animals and all kinds of music. Surviving Karen are two daughters, Elizabeth (Charles) Fricke Keller and Martha (Sim) Fricke Safford, both of Kohler, four grandchildren, Michael and McKayla Wilson and Rachel and Maria Safford; one brother, Thomas Kohls of Sun City, AZ; two sisters-in-law, Virginia (Brand) Smith of Rochester, MN and Dorothy (Michael) Sheehan of Elkhart Lake, and her very special friend and confidant, Michael J. Badtke of Sheboygan Falls as well as other relatives and many friends. In addition to her husband Walter, and parents, Karen was also preceded in death by her brother and sister-in-law, Rodney and Norma Kohls, and sister-in-law, Lois Kohls. A gathering and celebration of Karen's life will be held at Zimmer's Westview Funeral & Cremation Care Center on Saturday March 9, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. with the Reverend Thomas Fleischmann, officiating. Friends may call at Westview on Saturday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the service. A reception will follow the service at Westview . A memorial fund has been established in Karen's name to the Sheboygan County Humane Society. Karen's family would like to extend their sincere gratitude and thanks to the staff at Sharon Richardson Community Hospice for the wonderful care she received as a resident.
