Maria Houthuys

Maria Josephine Houthuys, age 83, of Sheboygan, went to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, at Aurora St. Lukes Medical Center in Milwaukee, early on Monday morning on November 1, 2021.

Maria was born on January 25, 1938, in Mechelen, Belgium, to Albert and Elizabeth (VanBuggenhoot) Boets. In 1948, when she was nine years old, Maria and her family relocated to Wisconsin. She attended Bethlehem School, South Side Junior High School, and Central High School.

Maria was united in marriage to Michel Martin Houthuys on September 23, 1988, in Mechelen, Belgium.

Maria has been happily retired for nearly 40 years. She spent her free time thrift shopping, going to garage sales, and volunteering.

Maria was a member of the Sheboygan eFree Church. She was involved in the ABF, Ladies Bible Study, teaching bible verses in AWANA, and did the decorating for Forever Faithful.

Maria enjoyed traveling to Europe to visit family and friends. She loved spending time with her family, and the holidays were her favorite time of the year. When her children were younger, she especially enjoyed camping with them.

Maria is survived by her three children, Deb (Rick) Burgard of Sheboygan, WI, Sheryl Miller of Sheboygan, WI, and Michael (Brenda) Pfeifer of Sheboygan, WI; grandchildren, Jennifer (Davide) Quaranta, Michael (Bridgette) Burgard, Katylyn (Andrew) Hummel, Erika and Makala Pfeifer; great-grandchildren, Ian, Bree, Connor, and Lillyana Burgard, Skylar Bounds and Greyson Young-Bounds, Vittoria and Stefania Quaranta, Ezekiel, Rylee, Brugge, Arrow, and Jericho Hummel; close friends, Joan Rothwell and Maggie Imig; and other relatives and friends in America and Belgium, Europe.

Maria is preceded in death by her husband, Michel; mother, Lisa (Raymond) Mewes; son-in-law, Robert (Bob) Miller; brothers, Raymond Mewes and Ervin Mewes; father, Albert Boets; sister, Beverly; grandparents; and other relatives and friends.

A celebration of life will be held for Maria at the Sheboygan eFree Church on Monday, November 8, 2021, at 6:00 PM with Pastor Jon MacDonald officiating. A visitation will be held for Maria from 4:00 PM – 6:00 PM at the church. Maria will be inurned at Greenlawn Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Maria’s name may be sent to the Sheboygan eFree Church.
