Mary Grace Wick Steinmann, age 95, of Landmark Square Condominiums in Sheboygan, died Thursday morning, February 27, 2015, at St. Nicholas Hospital from complications following surgery. Grace was born at Sheboygan St. Nicholas Hospital, March 8, 1919, the daughter of the late Dr. Will Walter Wick and the late Blanche (Morehouse) Wick. She was married to Karl H. Steinmann September 4, 1965 at the Chapel of the First Congregational Church UCC, Sheboygan, WI. She was a member of the First Congregational Church, United Church of Christ in Sheboygan. She joined the church before any other current member. Grace was graduated from the U.S. Grant School in June, 1932. She was graduated from Sheboygan High School in June, 1936. After attending the University of Wisconsin at Madison for one year, and then transferring to St. Mary's Hospital School of Nursing at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, she received her R.N. in June, 1940. She began her career at Sheboygan Memorial Hospital in the Nursery then moved to become an industrial nurse at the Kohler Company. Moving to Chicago, she practiced first at Presbyterian Hospital, then at Bendix Aviation. Grace volunteered to become a United States Army Nurse with the rank of 1st Lieutenant. From August of 1943 to February of 1946, she served as a clinic nurse at bases at Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and Fort Worth, Texas. After her military service, she returned to Chicago to continue clinical nursing at the Chicago Industrial Clinic under Dr. Corbet. Grace moved to Los Altos, California to work for Dr. V. Meyer as a combination office nurse, laboratory technician, and radiology technician. Again moving back home, she enjoyed a stint as a private nurse before joining Drs. Leslie Tasche and Burnell Eckhardt as operating room first assistant, laboratory technician and radiology technician. Grace's next position was industrial nurse for International Harvester, Milwaukee, WI. She then shifted to Milwaukee Crane in Cudahy, WI where she met her future husband. Grace became the Director of Nursing at Methodist Manor in West Allis, WI. The next move with her husband was to Warren, Ohio, where she became the NE Ohio District Nurse Surveyor for Nursing Homes. In earlier days, Grace was involved in weaving, knitting, golf, antiques, cards, and her Great Dane dogs, Hogan and Duke. At Landmark Square, Grace has reveled in the friendship, help, kindness, and enjoyable times with the residents and staff. She is survived by her two nephews, Willis "Woody" (Marian) Wick of Fort Myers, FL and Thomas A. Wick of Northfield, IL; her stepdaughter, Gertrude "Trudy" S. Maiwald of Racine, WI; her stepson, Karl M. (Diane) Steinmann of St. Clair, MI; Duane Heieren of Marietta, GA, the husband of her deceased stepdaughter "Pug", and her other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Karl H. Steinmann; her parents, William "Will" Walter Wick, D.D.S. and the late Edna Blanche (Morehouse) Wick; her sisters and brothers, Helen Estella Wick, Willis Walter Wick, Delprat Wick, Ashton Eugene Wick, D.D.S., and Mrs. Betty Louise Widder; and her nephew Thomas's wife, Barbara Diebold Wick. She was further preceded in death by a stepdaughter, Selma "Pug" S. Heieren. A memorial service will be held at the First Congregational Church, United Church of Christ, 310 Bluff Ave., Sheboygan, WI on Friday, May 1, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. The Rev. James Hollister and the Rev. Jenny Dawson will co-officiate. A time of visitation and support will be held at the church from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service. A private family burial service at Wildwood Cemetery will be held prior to the service. Memorial gifts in lieu of flowers may be made to First Congregational Church Memorial Fund or the Sharon S. Richardson Community Hospice and Palliative Care Center.
