Mel Hoor

Mel Ten Hoor, age 88, entered into Eternal Life on Monday, December 4, 2017 at his home. He was born on March 9, 1929 in Chicago, IL to the late John and Julia Ten Hoor. On June 23, 1951 Mel married Margaret "Muff" Brauer in Chicago. He served as a Medic in the U.S. Army. He began his insurance career in Chicago, then accepted a position in Grand Rapids, MI, where he stayed for 4 years. In 1962, Mel and Muff moved to Sheboygan where he began working at Heritage Mutual Insurance Company, which later became Acuity Insurance. He retired from Acuity in 1997 as Senior VP and Chief Operating Officer. Mel was a very deeply committed Christian as evidenced by his service to Calvin Christian Reformed Church. He was a member for 55 years and served as a Deacon, Elder, Sunday School and Catechism teacher, choir director and music leader. He was passionate about sharing the knowledge he gained from his life-long Biblical studies with the next generation. In later years, he led an adult Bible study up until his death. He volunteered with the Salvation Army for 22 years, serving as Volunteer Coordinator and a board member and served terms as Board President. Mel also served as a board member and chairman at Sheboygan Christian High School, was the charter President of Rotary West, served for 6 years as on the Pine Haven board and 1 term as Chairman. He played the violin and loved classical music.

Mel is survived by his wife, Muff; 5 children: Linda (Mel) Arentsen of Sheboygan; David (Cheryl) Ten Hoor of Eden Prairie, MN; Lisa (Daniel) Haen of Elkhart Lake; Robert (Lori) Ten Hoor of Sheboygan; Sue Ellen (David) Castellan of Lewisburg, PA; 17 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Mel was preceded in death by his parents.

Family and friends are invited to visit at Calvin Christian Reformed Church, 2313 Saemann Ave, Sheboygan on Thursday, December 7, 2017 from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. The Funeral Service will follow at 10:30 a.m. with Andy Hopp officiating. Following the service, Mel will be laid to rest at Oostburg Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Sheboygan County Christian School.
