Richard D. Bayens was born November 5, 1927 in Sheboygan to Edward and Edna (Nikisch) Bayens.
He died Thursday, October 20, 2016 at Sharon S. Richardson Community Hospice.
Richard attended Sheboygan Lincoln Elementary School before graduating from Sheboygan Central High School, Class of 1946. During WWII, he honorably served his country with a two year tour of duty with the US Army Infantry in the Pacific Theatre of Operations.
Richard continued his education and earned his Bachelor of Science Minor Degree in Social Studies from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He subsequently received his Master's Degree in Library Science in 1956. He was a faculty member and an assistant librarian at the University of Wisconsin-College of Agricultural and Life Sciences in Madison from 1956. He retired from the Wisconsin Department of Public-Instruction-Division of Library Science.
Richard was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church. He was also a member of the University of Wisconsin Alumni Association and the VFW.
His interest and enjoyment included reading good books, listening to good music, and the companionship of good friends.
Survivors include; Audrey Nikisch of Sheboygan and the extended family of Anna Showers of Stoughton, WI, and especially Roger (Cindy Raasch) Wersland, Linda (Parker) Gibbs, also Judith Stockinger and Sam Zelpe of Sheboygan and Holly Sherman of CA.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Carl, who died at the age of ten; a special friend, Ervin H. Showers who resided in Madison; very good friends and mentors, Earl and Ruth Sherman of Camarillo, CA; and by his most loyal and constant companion, a Lhasa Apso named Puff.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, November 1, 2016 at Ballhorn Funeral Chapels, 1201 N. 8th St., Sheboygan, WI 53081. Rev. James Hartman, Pastor of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, will officiate. A time of visitation and support will be held from 11:00 a.m. until the time of service. Burial will follow at Lutheran Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in his name for the Sheboygan County Humane Society.
