Romaine Therese Wellhoefer, age 94, of Sheboygan, died Thursday morning, February 18, 2016 at Sheboygan Senior Community.
She was born April 3, 1921 in Sheboygan to John and Therese (Mai) Phalen. Romaine was named after the French village of the same name where a little girl brought water over to her father and other soldiers during WWI.
She attended Holy Name Catholic Grade School and was a graduate of Sheboygan North High School, Class of 1939.
On June 13, 1942 Romaine and Louis W. Louie Wellhoefer were united in marriage at the Catholic Chapel in Fort Knox, Kentucky while he was in the US Army Signal Corps. Shortly thereafter Louie was sent to serve his country in Europe.
Prior to her marriage Romaine was employed at the Sheboygan Telephone Company and later worked part time as an aide at Sunny Ridge.
She was a member of St. Dominic Catholic Parish. She also was a member of the Doll Club and a Quilting Club.
Following retirement, Romaine and Louie enjoyed dancing throughout the state and attending dance conventions together. He preceded her in death on February 11, 2009.
Romaine is survived by her son, Jon (Nancy) Wellhoefer of Greenfield, WI; her daughter-in-law, Sue Wellhoefer of Racine, WI; five grandchildren, Amy, Traci, Jenni, Mark, and Erik; six great-grandchildren, Evan, Annie, Max, Amelia, Luke, and Addison.
In addition to her husband, Louie, she was preceded in death by her son, Joel Wellhoefer, and her three younger sisters, Geraldine, Patricia, and Mary Ellen.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, February 26, 2016 at Ballhorn Funeral Chapels. Rev. Daniel J. Lasecki, Senior Priest, will officiate. Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m. at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in her name for St. Dominic Catholic Church.
